Instruction – How to Prevent Children from Falling during Hospitalization

Falls can occur swiftly and easily, and may cause grave injuries. A new environment and a medical condition are factor that might induce falling. Your presence near your child is important, as it provides him/her a sense of security.

If your child has undergone a test, anesthetized treatment, receives medicinal treatment that affects alertness or complains of dizziness and instability, the chance of falls increases.

What should I do to prevent my child falling during his hospitalization in the hospital

  • Maintain an organized environment clear of unnecessary items near the child’s bed.
  • Make sure the equipment and tools are appropriate for the child’s age (carriage, bed, chair, and more).
  • Make sure the panels of your child’s bed are raised and closed, with the brakes locked, even if your child cannot get up or turn over independentl.
  • Make sure your child’s bed is at the lowest possible height.
  • If your child is connected to medical tubing, obtain instruction from a staff member regarding secure mobility with the equipment.
  • Babies should be put to sleep only in their dedicated bed, do not let your baby sleep in a parent’s bed or in a carriage.
  • Have your child wear a seatbelt when he stays in a carriage, carrier, food chair or wheel chair.
  • Prevent your child from climbing or standing on furniture and medical equipment.
  • Prevent your child from touching pipes and cables in his environment.
  • Make sure your child’s pants and shoes are the right size.
  • Make sure to walk in dry areas and avoid walking in wet areas.
  • Do not leave your child unsupervised, if you have to leave, obtain a replacement or update the nurse.
  • Maintain eye contact whit your child in the play room, and also prevent him/her from running through the department corridor.

At your disposal is a bell for summoning a nurse’s assistance at any hour.
